- Chardham
Char
Dham is a term coined for the four most revered Hindu temples viz'
Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. According to the
Puranas and various Hindu scriptures the Char Dham Yatra is of very
high religious significance. Pilgrims from all around the world
brave the severe conditions of landscape and weather to visit the
shrines and have the holy darshan of the revered diety.
- Amarnath
Yatra
The Amarnath Yatra is organised every year by
the J &K Govt. during the month of Shravan ( July and August);
the dates however , vary every year looking at the weather
conditions and according to Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) in the month of
Sharavan (Vikrama Samwat). Yatra to Baba Amarnath Holy Cave for
which one has to trek a height of about 14,500 ft is full of thrill
and joy.
- Vaishno
Devi
The shrine of Vaishno Devi, the Mother Goddess,
is one that millions of Indians from across the subcontinent go to
on pilgrimage. Situated in the Himalayan trail foothills, the Devi's
cave is visited throughout the year by the devout. It is said that
anyone who treks theHimalayan to her shrine to ask for a boon will
rarely return disappointed whether the request is for a son, an
early marriage or good results in a forthcoming examination.
- Haridwar
Haridwar
or 'the Gateway to the Gods' is one of the seven holiest places
according to Hindu mythology, as the Gods are believed to have left
their footprints in Haridwar. Due to its geographical location too,
Haridwar stands as the gateway to the other three important
pilgrimages of Uttrakhand namely, Rishikesh, Badrinath and
Kedarnath. Referred to as Mayapuri, Gangadwar, and Mokshadwar in the
ancient scriptures and epics, Haridwar has always remained a major
pilgrimage for the Hindus.
- Rishikesh
Rishikesh
is popular with the foreigners. The various Yoga asanas taught on
the banks of the river Ganges draw them to this place. Many yoga
centers are found here. A person visiting Haridwar invariably visits
Rishikesh. Since the distance is not too much, one can take a bus,
train, taxi or even a three-wheeler.
- Mathura
An
ancient city, Mathura derives its glory & sacred character from
being the birth place of Lord Krishna. Through centuries, it has
attracted pilgrims from the Hindu , Buddhist & Jaina fold.
Formerly the capital of Braj ( 600 B.C.) Mathura is situated on the
west bank of river Yamuna. The present day Mathura abounds in places
of religious & historicinterest. All round the year, a large
number of festivals & fairs are held in Mathura & the
adjoining areas of Vrindavan, Gokul, Barsana & Goverdhan.
- Vrindavan
Vrindavan
is a city of temples. One of the most important and sacred temples
is the Bankey Bihari Temple, where one can expect to see devotees
engaged in simple acts of worship such as ecstatically clashing
small cymbals together as they move in time to ancient rhythms. The
Pagal Baba Temple has eleven stories in all and is one of the more
modern pieces of architecture.
- Varanasi
Varanasi
also known as Benaras is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in
India.Situated on the banks of sacred river Ganges, Varanasi has
been a centre of learning and civilisation for over 2000
years.Besides being a pilgrimage centre,it is considered as an
auspicious place to die, ensuring an instant route to Heaven Apart
from Hinduism it is also an important pilgrimage centre for
Buddhists as it was at Sarnath (10 km from Varanasi), Lord Buddha
gave his Ist sermon after enlightment. It is the only city in Asia
with three Universities.
